  • Synonyms/variants: sebaceous gland adenoma; variant “cystic sebaceous tumor” (morphological marker of Muir-Torre syndrome/MTS). Flux 2017 , Papadimitriou 2023 .
  • Historical description: Sebaceous tumors have been described since the beginning of the 20th century; the entity “sebaceous adenoma” was consolidated as a benign neoplasm distinct from hypersebaceous carcinoma and sebaceoma in classic histopathological series and contemporary reviews. Shalin 2010 , Flux 2017 .
  • Epidemiology (outpatient clinic): yellowish papulonodular lesion, solitary, predominantly head and neck in older adults ; may appear in atypical locations (trunk/extremities), where suspicion of Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) increases. Papadimitriou 2023 , Flux 2017 .
  • Codes:
    • ICD-10-CM: usually coded as benign skin neoplasm according to location (D23.x; e.g., face D23.3, scalp/neck D23.4)
    • ICD-11: There is no specific code for “sebaceous adenoma”; classify within benign neoplasms of skin appendages according to the national version.
  • Diagnostic checklist (quick)

    • Clinical presentation: solitary, yellowish papule-nodule, head/neck.

    • Dermoscopy: yellow areas + coronal/arborizing vessels. Moscarella 2013 .

    • Biopsy: excisional or deep punch with epidermis-dermis (±TCS).

    • Histology: lobes with basaloid periphery and center of mature sebocytes; >50% sebocytes . Shalin 2010 .

    • Key IHC: adipophylline (+); supportive AR/EMA ; MMR if SMT risk factors. Ostler 2010 , Lee 2017 .

    • Plan: complete excision; if MMR altered/high risk → genetic + Lynch screening. Nguyen 2020 , Cohen 2023 .
