Overview
Names: tinea corporis, tinea circinata , ringworm (hairless skin). The endemic subtype tinea imbricata ( Trichophyton concentricum ) is also associated with it.
History: described since antiquity; the term “ringworm/tinea” became established between the 18th and 19th centuries ( herpes circinatus/tinea circinata ).
Epidemiology: cosmopolitan; more frequent in warm-humid climates, overcrowding, contact with animals (zoophilic) and in households with cases of tinea pedis/ungual tinea. Recent increase in recalcitrant and resistant cases (e.g., T. indotineae ).
