Overview

  • Alternative names: Epidermoid cyst; epidermal inclusion cyst; infundibular cyst. (Avoid “sebaceous cyst”). Trinh 2019 .
  • Historical description. Entity recognized since the 19th century; consolidation of the term due to its histological features. Brownstein 1983 .
  • Epidemiology. A very common benign lesion in adults; it predominates on the face, trunk, and neck. Series of 432 cases: face > trunk > neck. Kim 2020
  • Codes. ICD-10: L72.0 ; ICD-11: EK70.0 (infected EK70.00).
  • Diagnostic checklist.
    • Clinical presentation: subcutaneous nodule with punctum , slow growth.

    • US without doubt: ovate, avascular mass, posterior reinforcement; pseudotestis/submarine ± “twinkling” . Huang 2011 , Yoon 2019 , Clarke 2016 .

    • No routine labs; culture only if purulent drainage. Meister 2021 .

    • Treatment/biopsy: complete excision with capsule ; defer if acute inflammation is present (drainage/anti-inflammatories). Lee 2006.
